English

Pupils will study a variety of different genres of writing during the autumn tern including historical stories and non-chronological reports. We will be working on practising weekly spellings from the Year 5/6 National Curriculum lists. Spellings to be practised will be sent home weekly on TEAMS and Class Dojo. We will continue to reinforce and develop the use of good punctuation throughout all subjects.

Reading

The children will take home individual books, which are at their individual reading level.  During their whole class reading lessons in the autumn term the children will read a variety of texts including The Kiss of Death and Who Let The Gods Out.  They will work at developing their ability to retrieve, summarise and infer information from the text as well as widening their vocabulary.

Maths

We follow Power Maths at St James. The units we will be covering in the autumn term are:

  • Place Value within 100,000

  • Place value within 1,000,000

  • Addition and subtraction of more than 4 digit numbers

  • Graphs and tables

  • Multiplication and division

  • Measure – area and perimeter

In addition to this, we do rapid recall daily that focuses on a different statement each week based on what the children need to be able to recall quickly. They are tested on these every Friday. We also complete TTRockstars focusing weekly on different times table facts. Children will complete a 5 in 5 daily, to ensure they are fluent in number concepts.

Science

During the first half term the children will complete the module ‘Earth and Beyond. This module introduces the concept of the Solar System and associated movements of Earth and the Moon.
During the second half term the children will complete the module ‘Get Sorted’. In this module children will learn how we compare and group materials, the difference between solids and liquids and experimenting with a range of materials.

Curriculum

During autumn term this is what the children will study for each curriculum subject:

HISTORY - we discover what Ancient Civilisations were and how their religious beliefs impacted on their lifestyles. The four main civilisations we focus on are – Ancient Sumer, Indus Valley, Shang Dynasty and Ancient Egyptians.

GEOGRAPHY - We will do a study on East Africa focusing on Kenya and Tanzania. We will make comparisons between life in East Africa and life here in the United Kingdom.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY - The children will design, make and evaluate a mechanical system. This will include a pulley.

COMPUTING - We use the Purple Mash scheme for our computing lessons and during the autumn term, we will learn about online safety, spreadsheets and databases.

RE - We are exploring two crucial question: What does it mean for Christians to believe that God is holy and loving? and Why do Hindus try to be good?

PE – In PE this term, your child will be focussing on building upon their skills in team games and gymnastics. PE happens every Tuesday morning. 5N will be swimming in Autumn 1 and 5F will be swimming in Autumn 2 – please ensure your child has a towel and a suitable swimming kit.

Music - We use Charanga musical school programme at St James. Your child will be studying ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ focussing on musical notes and singing.
