We will be using the texts ‘Superworm’, ‘The Gingerbread man, information about Monarch Butterflies and a recipe for gingerbread people to support our writing journeys.
Reading and Spelling
Phonics will continue to be an important part of the timetable in Year 2. Whilst the children will be in groups for phonics, we will also provide many opportunities throughout the week to continue to practise our phonics and spelling skills during other lessons. Home reading books are matched closely to your child’s phonic level.
Please read with your child daily if you can, if not at least 3 times a week. Please take time to help your child learn the spellings they are send home weekly.
We follow Power Maths at St James. The units we will be covering in the Autumn term are:
Numbers to 100
Addition and subtraction
Multiplication and division
In addition to this, we do rapid recall daily that focus on a different statement each week based on what the children need to be able to recall quickly. They are tested on these every Friday. Nearer the second half of the Autumn term we will begin 10 in 10 daily which recaps skills that they have been taught this year.
Over the Autumn term children will be learning about a variety of habitats and why animals choose to live in them. They will also learn about food chains. Following this topic we will learn about materials, their properties and why they are selected to make particular products.
In the Autumn term we begin with a Geography study about Broad Street, Birmingham. In this unit of work we look at different types of settlements (Hamlet, Village, Town and City.) and explore in detail our nearest city. Following this in History we learn about the Gunpowder Plot and the significant individuals from the past linked to the event during the reign of King James 1. In Art and Design we will be learning about portraits through exploring the works of Pablo Picasso and Hans Holbein. The children will learn about proportion and placement when drawing the human face. They will explore a range of media using pencil tone through shading, colour mixing with water colours and collage to create self-portraits. In Design Technology the pupils will be learning about structures. During this unit we will look at a range of structures in the world around us such as climbing frames, bus stops and bridges to identify how materials are joined and reinforced to create a successful structure. Children will work to a design brief to develop and make their own successful structure out of their chosen materials. During our computing lessons Year Two will be completing units of work about making music using a digital platform. They will also learn about online safety and effective searching when using the internet. We will be covering gymnastics and basic ball activity skills in P.E lessons this half term. The children will be learning a variety of rolls and jumps to then build into a sequence. In Religious studies Year Two will be focusing on celebrations across the Sikh, Christina and Muslim faith. As a focus on the Christian faith, we study a gospel unit ‘What is the good news Christians say Jesus brings?’ For our Music lessons we use the Charanga music platform. The children will be completing activities linked to rhythm and pulse as well as learning and performing a song titled ‘Hands, Feet, Heart.’
