As a school we follow Talk for Writing. Year 1 will be completing writing linked to narrative and focusing on sentence structure. We will be using the texts Little Red Riding Hood, Tiger Who Came to Tea, The Selfish Crocodile and Supertato.

Phonics will continue to be an important part of the daily timetable in Year 1. Whilst the children will be in groups for phonics, we will also provide many opportunities throught out the week to continie to practise our phincs and spelling skills during other lessons. Home reading books are closely matched to your child's phonic level.

We follow Power Maths at St James. The units we will be covering in the Spring term are:
Using numbers to 50
Introducing length and height
Introducing weight and volume

In addition to this, we do rapid recall daily that focus on a different statement each week based on what the children need to be able to recall quickly. They are tested on these every Friday. We will continue with 5 in 5 daily which recaps mental maths recall skills that pupils have been previously taught this year.

Over the Spring term children will be learning about different types of animals and their diet. Pupils will also be completing investigations linked to everyday materials.

In the Spring term we begin with a History study about our local area ‘Lion Farm to Oldbury high street’. In this unit of work we look at the history of the local area and community as well as learning about how the landscape and living has changed over time. Following this in Art and Design we will be completing a project inspired by Pop Art and the works of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichenstein. The children will learn about how contrasting colours work together to create a bold effect which is popular in Pop Art. Children will use the inspiration of Warhol and Lichenstein to create a portrait using contrasting coloured paint and a dot focus to create a Pop Art style portrait. In Geography the pupils will be learning about the local area ‘The Lion Farm’. During this topic pupils will learn about the human and physical geographical features of the local area and complete simple field work and map studies linked to their surroundings.

In Design Technology pupils will be learning about preparing fruit and vegetables. Within this unit basic food hygiene and safety will be taught and children will be designing and making their own healthy snack food product. During our computing lessons Year Two will be completing units of work about grouping and sorting. They will also learn how to create and interpret simple pictograms and spread sheets. In P.E pupils will be learning the basic skills and game of cricket and completing a unit on dance linked to action songs. In Religious studies Year One will be focusing on stories from the Sikh faith and learn about the important teaching of the Gurus. For our Music lessons we use the Charanga music platform. The children will be using a variety of percussion instruments to explore rhythm and pulse to music as well as learning and performing a songs. These are titled ‘In the Groove’ which is linked to a Blues and Latin genre of music and later in the term perform ‘Round and Round’ which is linked to a Bossa Nova genre.

Please read with your child daily if you can, if not at least 3 times a week. Please take time to help your child learn the spellings that are sent home weekly.
